About the Waste System Authority
Mission
The Authority's mission is to provide a convenient, efficient and compliant municipal solid waste transfer and disposal system for Eastern District residents and businesses.
Authority
Montgomery County delegated the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Plan for the Eastern District to the Waste System Authority of Eastern Montgomery County. There are twenty-two participating municipalities represented by the Authority that are obligated to make "best efforts" to deliver all municipal solid waste to the system. To facilitate delivery of the participating municipalities' municipal solid waste, the Waste System Authority provides two transfer stations located in Upper Dublin and Lower Merion Townships. Ultimately the municipal solid waste is delivered to a 1,200 ton per day Waste-to-Energy Facility operated by Covanta Energy in Plymouth Township through 2015. Covanta Energy is a multi-national corporation with operating subsidiaries throughout the world.
